In August 2021, the Artillery Genius Pro, an improvement of the company’s popular Genius 3D printer, was released alongside the Sidewinder X2.

As its name suggests, the Artillery Genius Pro is an enhanced Artillery Genius, with some changes making it a little smarter and others boosting safety. It’s given the Pro a lot of hardware value for only a $60 price increase over its predecessor. The original Genius was a superb printer, and Artillery has proved that it values customer feedback when upgrading its technology.

The Genius Pro includes several of our favorite features, the greatest of which were previously present in the original Genius. The Genius Pro’s fast-heating AC print bed heats up quickly. The Genius Pro maintains the low-noise experience we’ve had with earlier Artillery devices. Other feature updates were significant, but we found the Genius Pro to fall short of our expectations.

Artillery Genius Pro Review AUTOMATIC BED LEVELING

Though the original Genius allowed for the addition of a touch probe, the Genius Pro comes with a BLTouch-like probe right out of the box.

The bed isn’t permanent, so it doesn’t feel entirely “freeing you from complex manual leveling.” Still, it will help reduce maintenance by quickly producing a 9-point digital mesh that allows the printer maintains a consistent distance from the print bed. Artillery has included a space to simply attach a Z-end stop if you like a hard switch.

A filament sensor and power-loss print recovery are also included in the Genius Pro. These features should keep you operating reliably if you’re running a lot of prints – like in a print farm–and can’t spare the time to monitor your remaining Best 3D Printing Filamentfilament.

These features were present in the original Genius and aren’t high on our priority list. The level of protection increases exponentially as the number of printers increases, so it’s a helpful tool for people with larger businesses. After all, your print will likely be ruined if the power goes out for an extended period. It can, however, save you from the inconvenient inconveniences of power flickers.

Artillery has responded to the call to move beyond the 8-bit mainboards of the past by developing its own 32-bit “Ruby” mainboard in-house. After being used in the low-cost Artillery Hornet, the board has been used in all of the company’s future products.

If you decide to add more user upgrades, you should have plenty of room for these new brains.

Artillery Genius Pro Review RIGID Z-AXIS CARRIAGE

The original Genius had a problematic Z-axis. The Artillery had installed some proprietary Z-couplers on it, which helped mitigate the problem but didn’t completely solve it. The Genius Pro has addressed that issue, adding a robust metal casing to the Z-axis V-slot wheels to improve the system’s stability. We like the Z-carriages and think they perform an excellent job.

The Genius Pro features Artillery’s signature fast-heating AC print bed. We enjoyed the fast-heating feature, which we found to more or less live up to the company’s claims, reaching 70 °C in approximately two minutes and 100 °C in three and a half minutes.

The bed allows for a quick start to printing tasks, but it does so at the expense of temperature homogeneity, which has been a problem in the past.

Artillery’s Genius Pro is a feature-rich 3D printer for a reasonable budget price of ~$340 with an average-sized build volume of 220 x 220 x 250 mm – which is not tall enough to suffer from too much shaking due to the horizontally aligned screws on its unbraced frame as we found the taller variant of this printer did.

Where the Genius Pro suffers is its ununiform bed temperature and poorly aligned layers.

Artillery’s otherwise standout fast-heating AC tempered-glass print beds have suffered from poor thermal uniformity across all Artillery’s products and are further hindered by the build plate’s adhesion to the printer’s heat pad – making the surface difficult to clean and replace. Artillery could benefit from swapping the single-piece tempered glass top out in favor of an aluminum heat plate and clipped glass that allows users to swap out surfaces and clean more easily.

Layer misalignment was by far the worst issue we experienced with the Genius Pro. Worse yet, we failed to identify the cause. We have a few remaining suspicions but, having already spent an inordinate measure of time with this product, stopped ourselves from pursuing it further. Normal and more involved calibrations failed to resolve the issue, and we are left with the necessary assumption that this is a QA problem. Given the unrelated but otherwise odd behavior we experienced with our other recent Artillery 3D printer review, we suspect QA is a larger issue at Artillery.

Insofar as cooling is concerned, its construction needs work. The Genius Pro’s stock vents fall out easily and may cause damage to the surrounding fan casing, as it did in our case. More still, we feel the duct could be directing air better. Though we have no complaints about its performance with overhangs, some members of the community have blamed the system’s layer issues on the duct and its poorly directed airflow.

Ultimately, the Genius Pro may be worth it – if you’re comfortable with a large amount of troubleshooting and disassembling your new 3D printer should you need to. If that’s the case, the price is right for a great set of features and you can easily mod what’s missing.
